Flute Music Recordings
Classical Music Performance
For over ten years I worked as a professional flutist and flute teacher! I taught all over Southern California, providing both private lessons, group lessons, and masterclasses. Though I no longer perform, I still love classical music, and am extremely proud of the level of performance I reached before I quit.
Top Lessons Learned: I go into more detail on my About page, but I've found that there are so many aspects of being a musician that have also helped me in research.
- One of the biggest things was being able to switch modes quickly - for example, in a concert you may be playing music from the 1700's, followed by music from the 1960's. The technique required, the stories told, the sound, and postures are all different, and you are usually working on many pieces at once. This has led me to be comfortable working with a variety of projects simultaneously, and in the same way I loved music because I was always learning new pieces, I love that research allows me to continuously learn new things and study new problems.
- Thinking quickly on your feet and not letting anyone see you sweat. For the most part, musicians perform collaboratively, and whether it was you or someone else there are bound to be mistakes. I've had many opportunities as a musician to form quick reactions - whether the conductor takes something at a much faster speed in a performance than we've ever practiced before, or if I forgot part of my solo and need to find where the pianist is now, for the most part the audience has no idea anything happened and it is your job to keep the show going and continue to deliver a stellar performance.
These recordings are from several different recitals and auditions I had while studying in graduate school. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed playing them!
